The first thing that caught my attention about The Hunger Games was the furious looking poster which featured the iconic mockingjay pin that is worn by characters in the story. The second was the fact it was to be a post-apocalyptic film (I’m a huge fan of these kinds of sci-fi subgenre films). The third was when I heard it described as a Hollywood version of Battle Royale (the Japanese Kinji Fukasaku survival game-cult classic). How graphically violent it will be, I’m not sure. Still, I’m really interested in checking it out from what I’ve seen/heard so far.
Synopsis
The Hunger Games is set in a post-apocalyptic North America in the new nation known as Panem which holds a contest in which players are chosen by a raffle. One boy and girl (ranging in ages from 12-18) from each of Panem’s 12 districts are picked to fight each other in a game of death until only one is left. The winner receives prizes and enough food and other supplies to live without worry for the rest of their lives.
The film stars Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark, Woody Harrelson as Haymitch Abernathy, Willow Shields as Primrose “Prim” Everdeen, Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne, Elizabeth Banks as Effie Trinket and Lenny Kravitz as Cinna. It will hit theaters March 23.
